Honing My Style

Posted May 2019

Uh-Oh. Just a few hours before that Special Needs Prom, I decided to practice, and oh ~ this is what came out. Cute for sure, but I don't feel like this is what they're looking for this time.

It was coming out like this because I wasn't On my usual 'game'. I've been revamping my approach. So many different ways to approach a Caricature. I decided that I like to keep them Simple, but Also Exaggerated. I don't want to give up that Exaggeration that is the mark of a good Caricaturist. Without Exaggeration, without taking chances, I don't feel like a person can rightly be called a 'Caricature' Artist.

I was honing my Approach because I wanted to draw like the 4th picture here. That was my goal this time.

Aaaahh. I finally did it. It's a good thing I practice before I show up. Smoothing out the rough edges. Now I can draw Either way:

Aaaah. Aaaah. To cement this approach, I just swung into these next few pictures. I feel like I'm ready to go to work now:

Special Needs Prom

Posted Feb 2019

I don't see why a Special Needs Prom would be any different than anybody else's Prom. But that's how my upcoming job was described to me: to draw Caricatures at a Special Needs Prom.

People are people. And all I'm doing is drawing them. But in choosing what to draw for my Pre-Gig focus, I Googled "Special Needs Prom".

Obviously, the Feather has nothing to do with Special Needs ~ but that's where my experience took me. I noticed that I spent way too much time on the 'Feather'.

So I gave attention to the 'Feather' situation here ~ I had approached it with a Quick hint at what I used to draw for Ornamental Calligraphy. So now I learned how to Simplify ~ Cartoonify a Feather. Drew a better Party Caricature approach for Feathers.

Then I decided to Simplify the Caricatures altogether. To up my Speed:

Tame and Exaggerated Versions of the Same Prom Girls

Posted Jan 2019

Hi! Exercising switching between Tame and Exaggerated Caricatures tonight. I used some Prom pictures that I found on the web as references.

I did very well with the switching tonight. I had a good feel for both approaches. But I did all the Tame Caricatures first. And Then I did all the Exaggerated Caricatures. Some day perhaps I will practice switching back and forth each time.
