Getting Ready to Draw'm Funny

Posted 4 hours ago

Im warming up for my next booked Caricature Event. Client wants me to draw'm Funny. So I drew this Caricature based on a reference photo from my blog. No predraw.

My first attempt tonight ~ oops ~ looking too young. Quickly got rid of it and started again. Very pleased with what I drew, but I started wasting time, getting too fussy, when I started adding a print from his shirt. Good thing I caught myself ~ that isn't a good idea at Parties where I'm expected to produce and mooove. So I quickly got the gist of it and switched to the big pink flower.

BTW, the Caricature that I actually drew at a Party can be seen at the blog post https://caricatureexpress.com/happy-people

It was plenty funny enough. But just because I drew something Funny 3 years ago, doesn't mean I can draw something Funny in a few days from now. Unless I do my warm-ups. So now I'm feeling comfortable about the upcoming Event. In the Zone.

And then I felt like drawing them again. Even more exaggerated. Because I was still in the Zone when I tried to get to sleep

Just Go With It

Posted 17 days ago

It's hard to find time to practice. I've been getting more and more serious with my practice, and tonight I felt like it's time to change focus. I felt like it's time to work on my Party Caricature Speed. So even though I felt like my first few practices were too big (when I make Portraits, if I make them larger than my open hand, they look grotesque), I didn't pause to figure out some approach that would make these Caricatures smaller. And before I was done, I got to feeling like these Giant Faces would be fine at an Event afterall. The Bold approach and the Bold Size make an Impact.

What I did was to take several Reference Photos from my website ~ Pictures of People that I already drew at Parties. I averted my eyes so I wouldn't see the Caricatures that I had drawn at the Parties. I just needed some Reference Photos for tonight's practice.

The more details I study, the more predrawing I want to do. But that slows me down at Parties. So I handled tonight's practice with No predraws.

The first few looked/felt amateur to me, but by not stopping to control the sizing, not stopping to get even more controlling, I managed to loosen up and get some decent Caricatures.

Alison's work is fantastic and colorful! She was very professional, arriving early to set up and not stopping until the time was over! She managed to draw close to 20 faces in the 2 hours she was there and each one of them came out amazing. I highly recommend her and her services, as you will not be disappointed.

Huh ~ Makes me wonder why I keep studying/practicing. My previous Party Caricatures were fine.

I had thousands of emails piled up here. Today I tried to clear some away to clear up Space on my Computer. Glad I noticed at least One email that had some interesting Pictures. Opened it, and found four Caricatures of Women that I had drawn at a Party back in 2015. That's 4 Years ago. It was quite fine. I particularly like the way I indicated the woman's body in the Black/White one ~ the body just showed up by (default?).

I booked a last-minute Event just a couple of hours ago. To draw at a Party of Teenage Boys. Just to keep my Zone, I decided to draw some teenage boys. So I Googled it and found a random photo of 4 teenage boys to use as reference. I quickly drew them ~ because it's almost 3am, and I want to go to sleep.

Looking. At first I wondered ~ Is it any better than the ones I drew 4 Years ago? It is more Active. But is that Better? Or just Different. I draw differently every day.

Then I realized that it's like going to the gym. Just because I Can do it, doesn't mean that I don't have to do it regularly to 'stay in shape'.
