Unlabeled Vision

Posted Jun 2020

I don't respect Caricatures that are just kinda stereotyped eyes, nose, and mouth on a face shape. That's like 3rd-grader's artwork (please Excuse this generalization). 3rd grad is a time when, because of their comfort with Reading alphabet symbols, their artwork gets symbolized. Symbolic. Certain lines represent certain sounds. And other lines represent certain Pictures.

So just go forward or back. Trying to break away from that, I try to focus on what I really see (but oh eye-function is also connnected to the brain, but that's another story). I try to focus on either See what a Camera would see, or I try to let myself get back to a pre-reading mentality ~ to draw like a 2-year-old. Neither sybolizing 'the face', nor symbolizing the Shapes that we'd see in a photograph. But getting back to that nebula of pure unlabeled vision.

I find this sort of fine-featured face difficult to Cariature ` especially in the Front View. But that's all I saw as I watched this woman speak on YouTube. I guess I could have emphasized the op-shape of her nostril ~ because it's 'different' ~ but that didn't really affect me. So I didn't force a 'funny' by doing that. Unnecessary. I don't have to make anyone laugh.

There I was, pen moving as usual. While watching YouTubes. I tried to 'save' my first picture by adding in a little Color. The Artwork is so Plain ~ almost as bad as the Caricaturists that 'fill in the blanks. But good. It looks like her. Then I tried the simplistic approach differently in the 2nd picture that I drew here. Giving up, Not Outlining. Not setting up for 'the blanks', and I felt like this 2nd drawing is so much more organic. Evolved. Confident. Not bored.

But eeeks. When I look at the final Results, the 2nd one doesn't necessarily Look Better than the first one. Only different. Complicating my life to Be a Real Artist ~ is just making my job harder. It was to just draw the first Caricature.

If I could REALLY get back to the Pre-Symbolic Brain, that would have been worthwhile. For me. If I ever felt like taking the Tiiiiiiime and Effort for it. But the Result would not have been Saleable. And it would not have been usable at a Party ~ when I have to Produce (how many can you do per hour?), and I have to connect with my audience (can't only focus inwards). So I wonder ~ why bother with the 'better' vews that are usable commercially ~ ~ when I could just as well 'just do it'

Joan Jett

Posted Apr 2020

from photos i found on the internet. Joan Jett. Fresco Digital Caricature

So. I'm torn between the Fresco app and the Procreate app. To be honest, what I really want to do on my Time off is Fresco app. It's like real painting, but cleaner. I feel like im in to it. Not a job. The way i really Paint just because i love to get in to it. I love to feel the expression develop as I paint. In Fresco. Just like in real Oil Painting. But without the mess.

But Procreate. That app came out years before Fresco. At first I kept trying to use it like real painting (what I can do in the Fresco app now), but I ended up developing a new type of Artwork instead. It wouldn't paint like Oil Paints. But going forward ~ discovering the special things that could only be done in Procreate. Could only be done with Current Art Supplies. I felt amazed with it. But I do have to say that it feels Commercial. Like the Product is what's important, not the Artist's experience.

So I did work very hard with the Procreate, and it can do some really neat stuff. That Fresco cannot do. It is much more suitable in a Party Setting ~ where I'm supposed to automatically drop in the dazzling answers. And I feel like I should stay connected with Procreate ~ since that's most of my business. At least, it Was most of my business until this Coronavirus thing hit. Anyway, I feel like I should stay connected with it and keep developing it more and more. I'm a grown-up. My job is more important than play.

But Fresco is more than play to me. It is more like meditation or heart or life. It's the sort of painting that I must do. That I would be doing in Some kind of media even if I never had another Job. And I prefer the Digital Fresco Painting to traditional media. Great. Versatile. More than Oil Painting (which is what I usually use it for), but it's more than that. I can mix Oil Painting with Watercolors and Pastels and Pencils and back and forth and more. Using any type of media I envision. I love Fresco

Middle of the night. Taking a break. Watching You Tube.

So my pen gets moving. Mindlessly drawing what I see.

Ready to Draw More People than I Can

Posted Feb 2020

I recommend Estimating 10 Faces per Hour. But I try to accommodate my Clients when they ask me to draw Faster.

Obviously, I can't do what I can't do. But there are ways to get more people drawn (if they all sit for their Caricatures very quickly ~ I can't very well Rush the Guests). I can approach the Artwork very simply. I can just draw Lines without Shading. I can skip the Color. And I feel that the way to keep them Simple is to just draw what I see ~ with not much in the way of Artist's Interpretation.

Still, the Artwork takes on a Quality of its own. Not the Whole Symphony, but a Simple Beauty in its Simplicity. Kind of Classy.
