I Caught a Bird
November 24th, 2008This man sat next to me in a diner. I drew him with no predraw.. Snapped a photo afterwards to show it here.. Because it’s such a good Caricature.. My associate was with me, and she laughed and laughed.. (I guess she’s not as used to it as I am.)

That Aha Moment
November 23rd, 2008Can you understand ?? This picture is okay, not the greatest, but I’m all excited with it. It’s a very important piece. It marks a turning point in my development as a Caricaturist, as a real Artist who doesn’t just copy the world.
It’s a picture of Klaas OpDeBeek, an Artist from Belgium. The first photo shows him holding the picture that I drew. It’s okay:
Then the picture was hanging around on my floor before mailing it to him. And one day, not trying, no effort, an Idea (Eureka!) came to me. Those narrow cheeks with that big noticeable mouth – I COULD TUCK THE CHEEKS INTO A BOWL OF THE MOUTH ! I was thinking outside of the box. Hadn’t seen that done anywhere else (That’s the picture that I posted here on 11/15/08):
Picture 2 (above) was the big turning point. But here’s another rendition where I tried a different way to portray my idea. Now I’m just fiddling around with it:
Eureka! Now I’m a Real Artist, a CREATOR !

Whirlwind
November 16th, 2008It’s a Whirlwind ~ and That’s okay.
So much on my mind - the email problem that I wrote about yesterday just compounds my current personal dramas. Setting boundaries on the homefront and really missing, I mean Really missing my friends, and here I go to work. For me that means thrown into Your Parties!
Where I drop it all, all that stuff I just wrote about. And I’m inundated with beautiful wiggly kids and happy grown-ups who think that pictures pop out as soon as they say the word. Okay. Whew. And today I was even in terrible lighting conditions. Didn’t think of taking out my own clip-on lights because the room was not dark. It’s just that the bright light was Directly Overhead. Made the top of everyone’s Nose light up, their eyes fade into shadow…. I wonder if catering halls even concern themselves with how well their clients will look in the lighting. Next time, I’ll remember to make things better for myself.
So there I was today. At a 1-year-old’s Christening. Couldn’t think - just smiled and drew and Enjoyed. No matter what.
Now that I’m back in the Studio, I’m glad to see that I have Nineteen photos on my phone. That’s Nineteen pictures I drew in Two Hours - And most of those were even doubles - two people on a page. With all these crazies going on, I’m still so thrilled to see what good stuff comes out. I’ll show you some of the pictures:

World Peace
November 10th, 2008I think I’ve already grown again!
Dan, Elgin, and I met up with some other Artists who were traveling through New York - including Paul from England, Yuko, Kimmi, Kuni, and Taka from Japan, and Andy Urzua from CA !
Here are 2 Pictures that I calmly drew on my train-ride home - with No Predraw! Seeing the exaggeration and then representing it simply.
I am looking forward to tomorrow’s gig. And I’m excited about the plans I have for more growth of all kinds in the coming year.
Growth and Energy and Excitement - are all connected with each other!
Such Happy Times - Such Special People. We had so much Fun - even with the language barrier. Kimmi, for instance, spoke No English! Yet we connected, laughed, shared, skipped, and experienced stuff together. Wherever I’ve gone, whoever I’ve met, the People of the World can live together peacefully - if we treat each other normally. Respectfully.
Then, when I got home, I really enjoyed Creating these 2 pictures of the same person:
